Christians VS. Atheists
10 Reasons Why Christians Believe In God
1 - He's changed their life and they have experienced a spiritual cleansing of their sins.
2 - He's answered prayer.
3 - The complexity of life logically points to a creator.
4 - The birth of the church, empty tomb of Jesus, and the radically changed lives of the disciples after they saw the resurrected Jesus.
5 - No first century writings that called Christianity a fraud or that Jesus was never resurrected and that they found his body.
6 - Expanding universe points to a beginning of the universe. God created the beginning.
7 - Evolution from non-living inorganic molecules to everything in the universe is unsubstantiated and makes no sense.
8 - Have experienced what was considered an unexplainable miraculous event or healing in their life.
9 - Fulfilled Bible prophecy.
10 - Confirmed archaeological evidence for things in the bible.
10 Reasons Atheists Do Not Believe In God
1 - Fossil evidence for evolution.
2 - No proof for God's existence.
3 - Bible contradictions.
4 - Doctrine of hell is unjust.
5 - How could God have always existed?
6 - Too many stories in the bible are hard to believe that really happened.
7 - The problem of evil existing with a loving God.
8 - Hypocrisy observed in Christians.
9 - Disunity among Christian denominations.
10 - Can't understand why a blood atonement is necessary for the forgiveness of sins.
Which side are you on and do you have any other reasons that are not on the list here?
(I didn't do this post to debate any of the points. I just listed reasons that each side might give. I will leave the discussion and debate to the commenters.)

There are a lot of logical reasons that some Christian's believe that aren't on the list, there are a lot of personal reasons that atheists believe that are not on the list.
Also the most common reason (especially for 20th century America) for atheists and Christians to believe what they believe is not on the list. Because they hate non-Christians/non-Atheists. (Respectively)
A very emotional reason to be sure but still is not on the list.
I've found in my experiences with my friends and non-friends that are Atheists that they simply want "proof," but as I tell them, it's all about faith, trusting in something you cannot see. God never said for us to "prove," it...He simply asked that we "believe" it. What is hard for me to understand about that quest is not understanding why they want proof, but rather why it's so hard for them to believe, especially when there are indications of Him everywhere around us, in nature, etc. I mean they have never seen a kidney filter out the toxins in urine yet they believe it because someone says it does yet for them to believe in a God they can't see but people say exists they deem impossible. Go figure, rofl, :)!
Glad to see you are back, my friend, :)!
Hey Larry I love it that you are back my brother !
It is true that information must reach the mind for understanding to start to show to the unbeliever their condition and the facts of Jesus and the Gospel . After which a belief can be formed in the truth of what was given to them . Even satan and his fallen angels can believe the truth about Jesus and if one stops there they are no better and no closer to the Kingdom of God . Up to now one is just prepared for the work of Holy Spirit to bring them to a saving faith . The power of God through the Spirit compels them to a total commitment to Jesus as Christ and receive Him as Lord of their life and the only way to God by the blood shed on the cross . The atheist are not too tough to be reached but it is the antitheist who are so destructive to themselves and to others . They claim there is no God and they HATE him ! I ask them if God does not exist why do they waste so much energy and time hating him and trying to get others to join them in their hate ? Even if you answer each attack on each point that they can not get around they will never stop with their slurs and filth as they defame my Lord . I ask them who put such hate in their heart and tell the it is not a natural thing to hate something that does not exist . As they pause I tell them it is a supernatural power that puts into the the same hate he has for God and that power is satan himself . They just vomit more filth but the thought is planted to go over when they are alone and quiet .
I'm so blessed to hear from you again !
Barry
Atheist because of #1 and #2. #4 definitely helps. I'm hoping #10 is referring to a communion?
Hey, haven't heard from you in a while. What's up?
For the "believing" reasons, you forgot "because I was told God exists by my(parents/preacher or priest/friends/someone I respect).
This is a BIG reason that some people believe in God--because they've been raised to, or told to by someone they admire. Granted, alot of these minds are of the more simple nature, but I understand that because I've been there.
@I_am_Michelozzo - Yes, that's another reason, although for
many people by the time they reach their teens or twenties, they change
what they believed when they were younger.
I went from laughter to anger while reading the first list. Most of those are clear distortions of the available facts.
The second one makes obvious sense.
I'm an atheist mainly because of #1, #2, and #7, plus just what I have experienced in my life, all events which pretty much lead back to said numbers.
#5 might be interesting to blog on...
@nidan - Not all Christians hate Atheists, and vice versa.
@JUSTAVAPORHERE - I think that most Atheists understand that its about faith but with the kidney example, the thing is people HAVE seen how the body works. There is evidence. Without evidence there is no plausible reason to believe in something based on logic. However believing in God doesn't require logic, it requires faith. There's a big difference.
@JUSTAVAPORHERE - I agree.
I think both people who believe in religion and people who don't are both annoying.
I can see both sides... It's hard to give yourself to blind faith and sometimes even after, you want proof and pull back.
i don't pick sides; i don't think i ever will.
there's too much drama on either end, and it seems like there's not going to be a stop to it.
i'd rather stay away from either side, as the extremist members of each category make being a part of their group rather unappealing.
while there are some atheists i would not want to be associated with, just like there are some christians that i would prefer to avoid, it has more to do with how they present themselves and their views, than the views themselves. each side acts a lot like the other; they're never satisfied with the opposing debate.
that cycle bores me.
Here is a non-religious observation. You ready? Most everything on the Christian side of the list is pro-God. Most everything on the atheist side of the list (9 of 10) is anti-God. The similarity? They both have to do with God. Atheists need a better list.
This is not a black and white issue. I don't have an either/or answer. Evolution does not really disprove the existence of God, nor does the absence of Jesus' corpse prove he was resurrected. The inability to reconcile matters of faith don't stand for disproof of anything. Lack of written historical evidence of anything is not evidence, but, rather, a lack of it. This idea of atheists and Christians lining up on opposing sides of definitive, polarized views is fabricated by a media-addled, faith-lame social monologue.
I believe in god, but in a pantheistic framework. Jesus is my Savior but I don't believe he rose from the dead, or was born of a virgin for that matter. I believe that awareness is a mystery that has not and may never be solved by logical empiricism.
I just don't believe in God. Simple. Fucking Hell. People say that you don't need proof to believe in God. WRONG. Yes you do. It certainly helps!
Yo this is simple
Christians believe in GOD because their parents tell them too.... at a young age you're quite impressionable. You can be 'brainwashed' to do anything and believe anything. It's like telling a kid Santa exists. Does he? no...but kids will believe it until they find out for themselves. If Santa had a following like God, everyone would believe in him till the day they died.
several hundred or thousand years from now we'll have our answer.... too bad none of us will be alive to witness it =(
Good to see you again Larry!
There are so many reasons for why people choose to believe what they believe; it's next to impossible to touch on all the reasons.
You have drawn a false dichotomy. On the immense spectrum of human thought, behavior, and belief, Christianity and atheism (which you paint as active disbelief in Christianity, rather than simple absence of belief in a deity) are only two tiny points.
"10 - Confirmed archaeological evidence for things in the bible."
You know what? The bible is a complete rip off of other stories from older religious groups and civilizations. The Epic of Gilgamesh points out that there were floods and various other things that the bible says, but the Epic of Gilgamesh is much older. Yes, there IS archaeological evidence of some things from the Bible being found and such, but it doesnt mean that it fits with exactly what happened in the Bible. The Bible is a fascinating mixture of literature, myth, and some recorded history. Should it control your life? No. thats ridiculous.
I would also like to say that my reasons for being Atheist are much different than what you stated. I think both of your lists are unfair to both parties.
